The grains millet, sorghum, amaranth, buckwheat, quinoa (as well as many others) are naturally gluten free. As long as you purchase only those products labeled gluten freethese grains are perfectly fine for you to eat.

Millets are a group of highly variable small-seeded grasses, widely grown around the world as cereal crops or grains for fodder and human food. Grown mainly in Africa and Asia. Millet is found in three varieties - Pearl Millet is called Bajra, Finger Millet is called Ragi and Proso Millet is called Barriin Hindi. Millets can be cooked in the grain form and can be milled to make excellent flour that is multipurpose in nature from rotis to patties, breads.

In medical terms "prevention is better than cure"

In case of learning disabilities early intervention is half cure.

Kids learning brain develops 80% before age 6. So during this golden period if any child is given extra support needed we can transform them close to normal.

Important note *
🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾

Announcer: NIH Radio, from Bethesda.
Announcer: For many teenagers and young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) finding a job represents a critical step in personal development and gaining greater independence but it can also be a time of uncertainty and questions. That's why the National Institute of Mental Health has funded a groundbreaking web based program called JobTIPS. Developed by Do2learn.com of Raleigh North Carolina Jobtips provides the kind of information that helps young people with ASD develop and maintain the skills needed to successfully navigate the employment process. Louis Buchholtz of do2learn.com is content director for JobTIPS...
Louise Buchholtz/ JobTIPS: A number of younger adolescents first in high school struggle with determining what their interest are and how to translate those interests into career contexts that might help them be successful
Announcer: JobTIPS addresses a wide range of social and communications issues as they apply to finding a job including when...or if...a jobseeker should disclose their disorder to an employer…
Louise Buchholtz/ JobTIPS: And we sort of break disclosure down into first asking the individual with the disability should you disclose and how do you determine whether you should disclose. We sort of task analyze that decision. And then if you do decide to disclose when and how you do that — do you do that during application process or before you start the job after you've been hired. Or do you wait until problems might occur and then disclose you have a disability.
Announcer: For young people with ASD JobTIPS offers interactive advice on much more than just getting a job...
Louise Buchholtz/ JobTIPS: One of the things we focus on most is how you keep a job and that's really the most comprehensive section of the JobTIPS website. Because, as many people know, social skills issues whether they be interaction with supervisors, co-workers or customers those potential social skills deficit can often cause an individual to lose the job whether that individual has autism or an intellectual disability
Announcer: To access this free web-based program, go to do2learn.com/jobtips… that's D0…the number 2...LEARN.com...backslash...JobTIPS.

Announcer: NIH Radio... from Bethesda.
Announcer: Recently, Dr. Ricardo Dolmetsch, an associate professor of neurobiology at Stanford, spoke with National Institute of Mental Health Director Dr. Thomas Insel. Devoted to Autism Spectrum Disorder research, Dr. Dolmetsch and his colleagues have generated stem cells from children with autism allowing them to study how the brain develops in children with ASD.
Dr. Thomas Insel: I thought a good place to begin the conversation was to ask you about your interest in autism and how that happened. You're someone who trained in calcium channels... worked on very basic problems in molecular biology and now you're interested in autism...
Dr. Ricardo Dolmetsch: Right, when I first got to Stanford I was interested in a very basic question.. and um.. you know for a few years we worked on that and that was really exciting but it was very arcane. And then about I guess four and a half years ago, our son was diagnosed with autism. And so this really changed my...the direction of my lab. Actually, what really happened was that my wife and I got together and we thought a little bit about what we could do and we came up with a bunch of projects and one of the ideas was that we were going to just change all of our efforts and that's how we started working on autism.
Dr. Thomas Insel: I know what you're working on now has to do with induced pluripotent stem cells. And that's a bit magical for many people... the idea that you can create a stem cell from skin or from some other differentiated cell. Can you explain what that is and how you think that will be helpful for studying autism?
Dr. Ricardo Dolmetsch: Our whole idea of development is that development is sort of a directional arrow. It's kind of like spilling water. You can spill water but you can't unspill water. And we sort of thought development went to the same way. You start out with an egg and you end up with a human- you don't go backwards. But it turns out that that's not quite true. So, this pioneering Japanese group led by Dr. Yamanaka developed this system that allows you to take for example skin cell or blood cell and convert it into a stem cell. And the way you do this is you introduce these four proteins that do something mysterious that nobody completely understands and it changes the cell and makes it into a stem cell. And that stem cell has the capacity to make every cell in your body including brain cells.
Dr. Thomas Insel: So you can make brain cells from the skin or blood cells of a child with autism.
Dr. Ricardo Dolmetsch: Exactly, so what this allows you to do then is you can then take.. for the very first time... you can make these tissues that you wouldn't be able to access normally. So, so you can take the skin cells of a child with autism and you can make stem cells from those skin cells and then you can take those stem cells and you can differenciate them to generate basically little pieces of brain. And then you can analyze the development of those cells as well as their function once they're mature and so this gives you insights that you wouldn't have any other way.
Dr. Thomas Insel: So, when you do this in autism how do those brain cells that you derieve from skin differ in children with autism versus kids who don't have autism.
Dr. Ricardo Dolmetsch: Well, this is something we're still working on, right and I think we're still at the very beginning. I think that the short answer is that we have so far only looked at a couple classes of autism and in those classes of autism we have learned something about how development is changing. So for example in one case we know that these kids are making too many cells that produce dopamine and norepinephrine. Dopamine and norepinephrine are these really important neurotransmitters that are important for motivation, attention and pleasure and for some reason these children are making too many of them and they're turning on the pathways that generate these neurotransmitters in the wrong cells. And so, that.... I mean just knowing that gives you a target- gives you something to target therapeutically.
Dr. Thomas Insel: Is there some way in which having the stem cells the way you describe is going to help us to develop new therapeutics?
Dr. Ricardo Dolmetsch: Oh absolutely. So, so.... this is the thing, right? We need to understand what is going wrong. And things are going wrong at multiple levels. So, so... we know for example.. so the first sort of level of understanding is we have to figure out what the genes are. We've started to identify many of the genes. The next level of understanding is we have to understand how those genes are actually changing the function and development of the cells and that is what we are working on-what we have developed. Now, once you know what is wrong with the cells you can then look for ways to reverse that.
Dr. Thomas Insel: I can't help but ask the question.. how you done this with your own son? Have you taken skin cells and created stem cells from him?
Dr. Ricardo Dolmetsch: We have. And we have sequences genome as well as ours. And you know, I mean, it's um... it's a difficult project to have in your own lab. Um... in a way.. you really want to know. And in a way you really wish.. you really hope that what you find is not too terrible. But absolutely, this is one of the motivations- not the only motivation. I think one of the things I've discovered in working on autism I've met many families - it's been that it motivates you in a way that... you know... is difficult to explain and in a way I never would have expected when I was being trained as a very basic scientist.
Announcer: This is NIH Radio.

Michelle Freund, Ph.D.: The brain initiative recently announced by the White House is really designed to facilitate innovative strategies to better understand the brain. And in order to do that we need new technologies. CLARITY is a great example of the type of new technologies that will enable future brain studies.
So prior to this technology, scientists used methods where they would take thin slices of the brain. They would put these on glass slides, process them with antibodies, which illuminate what chemicals are there. And then they would have to use a microscope to study which transmitters are in which locations. Unfortunately, you can’t see the structure of a neuron in a brain slice.
So with this technology, they’re able to look at the entire neuron in a three dimensional volume. And with this three dimensional structure intact, you can see where the neuron starts and what brain region it projects to. In slices, you can only see what’s in the position where you started. And what this technology will allow is to do is not only study what molecular or single elements of a cell are located in a neuron, but how those communicate with other elements in the brain.
So in the recent publication by Deisseroth and colleagues, they describe not only the ability to look at animal models – or whole brains of animals – but also the ability to look in human brain. So in a post-mortem brain from a child suffering from autism, they were able to trace neuronal projections from a significant volume of tissue. They’re also able to use the technology to stain for neurochemicals located in that brain region. And the potential for this type of research is great for understanding how disruptions in neural circuitry are involved in disorders. It has really transformative potential.
The technology shows us in the video an area of the brain that’s involved in memory, the hippocampus. And this video shows the neurons that are involved in processing memory, where they project, and what neurotransmitters, or chemicals are contained in those neurons. And it shows this in three dimensions, so you see not only where they start and where they project and how they might interact to form memories.
The video through an entire mouse brain shows us how neurons are connected. So the neural circuitry – which neurons project to which areas in the brain, how they might be involved in giving commands to execute certain functions that we know about from physiology studies, but we don’t actually know how they connect to each other. This technology allows you to bring those together.

Every day, the millions of them living with autism and their families face unique and daunting challenges that many of us will never fully appreciate. During April Autism Awareness Month, we renew our commitment to better understand autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and improve the lives of individuals living with it. A recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in USA estimates that 1 in 68 children in the United States has been identified with ASD. URL: http://www.cdc.gov/features/dsautismdata/
This latest estimate makes it clear that autism affects the lives of millions of our friends, neighbors, colleagues and family members.  Even though exact statistics research data not available, AutismHelp.in is committed to bring awareness in parents and extended the support required for children for early intervention and get necessary advise for proper recovery.

Let us recommit ourselves to making advances through research and effective services and supports that will enhance the lives of the individuals and families—our children, friends, and neighbors—who live every day with autism.

www.autism.school---- Autism is a general term used to describe a group of complex developmental brain disorders – autism spectrum disorders – caused by a combination of genes and environmental influences. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by communication difficulties, social and behavioral challenges, and repetitive behaviors.
ASD is a developmental disability characterized, in varying degrees, by persistent difficulties in social communication and restrictive and repetitive behaviors, interests, or activities. We know that early screening and intervention at younger ages helps children get the most effective treatments earlier in life. Most children with autism are diagnosed after age 4, even though autism can be diagnosed as early as age 2.

A Visual Guide to Autism ---
Treatment: Sensory Integration
Children with autism may be extremely sensitive to sounds, touch, taste, sights, or smells – similar to a condition known as sensory integration disorder. For example, they may be upset by bright flashing lights or a school bell. A small study by Temple University researchers found that helping children adjust to different sensations led to fewer autistic mannerisms and better behavior.

Chieko Asakawa:
How new technology helps blind people explore the world
How can technology help improve our quality of life? How can we navigate the world without using the sense of vision? Inventor and IBM Fellow Chieko Asakawa, who's been blind since the age of fourteen, is working on answering these questions. In a charming demo, she shows off some new technology that's helping blind people explore the world ever more independently ... because, she suggests, when we design for greater accessibility, everyone benefits.

Teens with autism and caregivers should plan early for adulthood: As the number of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders continues to rise, medical professionals have emphasized early diagnosis, intervention and treatment. However, less attention has been given to children with autism once they reach their teen years and adulthood. Now, one University of Missouri researcher is working to find ways to support teens with autism and their caregivers so the teens can transition into adulthood successfully and independently.
"We need to focus our efforts on addressing the needs of young adults with autism in a much bigger and broader way,"

Introduction: Welcome to “Speaking of Science”, the National Institute of Mental Health presents a series of conversations with innovative researchers working in a wide range of disciplines to pave the way for the prevention, recovery, and cure of mental illness.
In today’s “Speaking of Science” vod cast, Dr. Peter Bearman is the professor of Sociology at the College of Arts and Sciences at Columbia University. He also serves as co- director of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health and Society Scholars program at Columbia. Recently, Dr. Bearman came to the National Institute of Mental Health to talk about the focus of his work, autism prevalence. NIMH’s Director, Dr. Thomas Insel, sat down with Dr. Bearman to discuss autism research and began by referencing recent studies that indicate an increase in autism prevalence.
Dr. Insel:  So, as you look at this that question that everyone is asking is when they see the numbers now from the CDC where it’s gone from 1 in 1500 to 1 in 150 and apparently here in the fall of 2009 the figure that’s emerging is closer to 1 in 100. Meaning, that even since 2002 there has been a very profound increase in the number of children being diagnosed with autism.
Dr. Bearman: And Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Dr. Insel:  Autism Spectrum Disorders?
Dr. Bearman: Well that’s, an important distinction. I mean obviously there’s a profound increase in Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Dr. Insel: Is there an increase in the number of children with the disorder or with the Autism Spectrum Disorder or does this largely reflect the change in the way the diagnosis is used or some sort of increase in ascertainment?
Dr. Bearman: Well, I think that’s the big million dollar question. Our work which arises from California can, show that changes in diagnostic processing and diagnostic criteria I would say the period from 1992 to 2005 the changes in diagnostic criteria over that period that operate on the border between autism and mental retardation can be associated with about a quarter of the increase prevalence. Over that same period there has been a really fundamental change in the ascertainment, you can see that in lots of ways, but the most obvious way to see the changes in ascertainment, is to see that the social economic status gradient that used to be present for autism, the fact that children living and residing in wealthy communities are more likely to get a diagnosis, and that gradient largely disappears.
Dr. Insel: What seems important Peter in the way you’ve done this rather than you answering the question to say it’s increase, not increased your answering the question by what proportion of increase can be explained by separate factors because everybody’s pointing to changes in diagnosis, changes in ascertainment the way in which services may affect the use of the diagnosis. So what everybody really wants to know at the end of all this, is that actually are more children affected with the disorder or will 100 percent of this increase in prevalence be explained by these other factors?
Dr. Bearman: Our strategy is to try to decompose this increase into its constituent elements. Some component of that is increased ascertainment, some component of that is diagnostic change in diagnostic criteria, some component of that arises from already known risk factors, such as increases in parental age are associated with greater probability of genome mutations that could lead to copy errors that are associated with neurodevelopmental disorders. So social demographic changes that are affecting all western countries, the United States, and also California, can express themselves in increased incidence of autism on top of diagnostic ascertainment dynamics. I think the trick to figuring out how to decompose this increase into its constituent elements is to pay attention to the two dimensions that are important. The first dimension is temporal just the fact of temporal change, we are in the period of increased prevalence and if we’re in a period of increased prevalence and at the same time for example there’s also an increase in older parents. The risk associated with older parents will naturally appear to be greater now than it was a decade ago. So paying attention to temporal heterogenic is important. The other part of our work I think that’s  the most exciting is to pay attention to the spacial heterogenic and the fact that we can observe very strong,  very distinct, very stable clusters of increased risks for autism at very fine spacial resolution. For example, in California, there’s a very clear cluster in about 20 kilometers by 50 kilometers in which the relative risk for autism not, Autism Spectrum Disorders but autism itself is significantly higher over every year of observation that we make than any other place in California. That invites a couple of considerations, first, it invites the recognition that if you observe local spacial clustering whatever causes some components of the increased prevalence in autism it is not a global treatment. Secondly, it invites us to ask, well is there something in that local area that is driving an increased prevalence that could be a shared toxicological environment, it could be a virus that moves through and spreads from person to person and affects children in utero. Or it could be a piece of an ascertainment process which would be the diffusion of information from parent to parent as they learn how to recognize some symptoms for autism which have no biological markers.
Dr. Insel: From what you know now when you add all of those together how much of the increase can you explain?
Dr. Bearman: Well that’s a complicated question, but I think we can pretty uniquely associate about a quarter of the increase from the birth cohorts from 1992 to 2001 which is a lot, to diagnostic change on the border between diagnosis and mental retardation in autism. I think we can associate about 16 percent of the increase on the other border between autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders on the spectrum: Asperger’s, PPDNOS etc. And those are largely non over-lapping components of increase, so that’s about 40 percent. I think the spacial clustering itself adds another few percent. I would say I am confident that 40 percent of the increase I think I know what caused that. That leaves a lot of increase left, 50 percent is a lot to look for still.
Dr. Insel: Any ideas about what’s driving that other 50 percent?
Dr. Bearman: Well, some is genetic. I think that the increased parental age accounts were 11 percent of the increase over this period and that’s a lot and the mechanism by which increased parental ages expressing itself I think likely largely genetic. I think the tricky part is going to recognize that it would be harder now to find that 50 percent. It would look like it should be some toxicological environment that’s shared because of the spacial clustering. Because there’s a very strong process of amplification of the understanding of autism that leads to increased diagnosis as parents learn how to recognize symptoms a very, very, small event that would transform the environment five years ago, ten years ago, even you could imagine, 40 years or 50 years ago, when the moms of children with autism now were in utero as eggs- a very small event could cascade into a larger epidemic now.
Dr. Insel: So what do you tell parents who ask about this if you have friends who have autistic children and they say “What’s going on here? Why this epidemic?” What do you say in response?
Dr. Bearman: Well, I think parents are struggling to just enormously difficult to have a child with autism. It makes it very hard. I think parents are naturally searching for explanations, and I think that the message now is the search for a quick and dirty explanation might not be advancing science.
Dr. Insel: Thank you very much.  Good discussion.

Dr. Tracy Bale: Many of our neuropsychiatric diseases have a very strong sex bias. For instance, autism is 4 to 1 – actually now it’s more than 4 to 1 – boys to girls. Why is that? What’s been thought likely, for many years now, is that there must be some fetal antecedent. Meaning, some perturbation during pregnancy, especially for neurodevelopmental disorders, that either takes in contribution of your genetic predisposition and adds to it an environmental sort of push – or maybe that environmental push itself is the genetic predisposition.
What is experienced during very plastic periods of development can end up altering – and we call this epigenetic, because it is not changing your gene sequence. It is just modifying the way in which those genes are expressed. This is very important for understanding how the brain develops, and how, later in life you’ll respond to different perturbations yourself that may predispose you toward disease.
What we don’t have in any neurodevelopmental disorder is biomarkers. We really don’t have any way to determine which child may be predisposed to presenting with, or developing, schizophrenia or autism. We have no idea. So our hope is that when we expose mom to stresses while she’s pregnant, that if we could find changes in proteins or gene expression or epigenetic marks that are either sex-specific or in response to stress. We’re looking within amniotic fluid and in the placenta. And the reason we’re looking there instead of the brain, is because it’s obviously much more translatable. You cannot, obviously, go into a baby’s brain – nor would we want to – and look at these changes. What we can do: it’s very easy to gain access, if you thought that there was a reason – that a mother had experienced a trauma in pregnancy and you wanted to know. So we’re looking for markers in the mice that would be relevant – and hopefully, we could then look in humans and say yes, these are the same proteins. There are sex differences. These are affected by stress. And they may be predisposing – or at least markers of an indication that mom experienced some sort of trauma during pregnancy that could then lead to a change in the offspring’s brain development.

Autism postmortem brain tissue was collected from NICHD and ATP brain banks.
Several different regions of cortex were sampled.
This example shows a sample taken from frontal cortex.
Thin sections were created from each sample.
Each section was then labeled for a specific cell type using a process called in situ hybridization.
Anatomists reviewed each section for abnormalities.
We identified regions of tissue with abnormal labeling in autistic cortex.
The abnormal labeling spanned multiple layers of cortex.
We call these regions "patches".
From the stack of images we reconstructed entire cortical layers...
Enabling us to see the patches in 3D.
We found patches in almost every sample taken from frontal cortex, indicating widespread distribution.
Further research is needed to understand why the cells are abnormal in the patch regions.

ADHD in Children Slideshow -
ADHD: What Is It?
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition that robs children of their ability to focus and pay attention. Kids with ADHD are fidgety and easily distracted. This makes it difficult to stay "on task," whether it's listening to a teacher or finishing a chore. The National Institute of Mental Health estimates 3% to 5% of kids have ADHD, but the most recent survey from the CDC showed that 11% of children have it.
